Red Dr Martens

I sewed a dress yesterday. Today I wore the dress that I sewed.

Home made fairy dress Dr Martens

This is the first dress I’ve made out of a non stretch fabric. I also drafted the pattern myself. I’m quite surprised it turned out this well. The last time I attempted to sew a dress from cotton, it didn’t end to well (which is part of the reason I hardly sew dresses)

Velvet blazer forest little red riding hood

Hair bow: Alannah Hill, Choker: Home made, Velvet blazer: Thrifted, Dress: Home made, Tights: Myer, Shoes: Dr Marten.

I suppose you’d call this type of dress a ‘skater dress’. It has a fitted top, and the skirt is a 3/4 circle skirt. I’ve made the dress out of two layers of material. The inner layer is a floral printed cotton, and the outer layer is a sort of netting.

wpid-c360_2014-11-10-18-27-08-627.jpg

The frilly bits around the base of the dress were hand gathered, and then hand stitched around the base of the outer net layer of the dress. (never. again.(Although, in saying that, the gathered net frill is what turned this dress from an nice dress into a really nice dress))

wpid-c360_2014-11-10-18-19-31-139.jpg

If I had the choice, I would have used the machine to stitch the frill onto the bottom of the skirt, but unfortunately the net was super fragile, super stretchy and super uncooperative.

I participated in the Davistown markets today. It was a long, but great day.

My friend Ashley let me tack onto her stall

image

image

Sorry about the orientation, my phone wouldn't let me rotate it!

It was a pretty quiet day, and I didn’t sell many pieces (I sold two pieces. Of those my mum bought one (I don’t think it really counts if your mum buys it)) but it was ultimately a good experience.
It’s given me the motivation to revive the etsy store I started (I’ll post a link once I get this up and running!)

Anyway, enough about markets!
This is what I wore today.

image

Blazer: David Lawrence, shirt: thrifted, belt: Alannah Hill, Skirt: home made, petticoat: David Lawrence, socks: ebay, shoes: kmart, necklace: the cats pyjama pants, hair bow: Alannah Hill

I figured because it was a ‘seaside’ market that I’d go with something ‘sea’  themed.

image

All in all it was a good day!

I think I’ve learnt my lesson

Yet another forgotten shoe shot. Have this fabulous picture of my friend Mitch instead.

Now that’s out of the way, I’m going to tell you a story. With a moral.

image

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know I purchased a camera recently. You’d also know that I’m still getting used to said camera.

image

The day it arrived in the post I spent several hours playing with it and googling all the things about it. This included one of the adjustable settings ; the ISO.

image

In my googling I found out that a higher the ISO made dim situations better, but at a cost. The cost was loss of clarity due to digital noise.

image

To
When I shot my photos today it was dim, and my lighting tests were shadowy and awful. So what did I do to rectify the situation? I raised the ISO. And what did raising the ISO do? It turned my pictures into noisy messes.

The moral of the story is don’t raise the ISO on the Sony qx10 if you don’t want a noisy photo in a dim environment.

Once again, I have forgotten to photograph my shoes, but I have this brilliant photo of my bandmate Nick to take its place!

image

This is what I wore Thursday! Unfortunately the pictures turned out a little bright due to me not being used to the new lighting rules that come with a decent camera. Despite this I still kind of like them (especially when it allows me to do ridiculous edits like this one)

I feel as though I’ve been wearing rots of ‘fairy’  clothing lately. Lots of lace and flowers.

image

I suppose I did have an excuse to be fairy like today. I was in one of my favourite opp shops when I stumbled upon the shirt I’m wearing. It’s an off white cropped version of this dress.

image

My L. Mus exam is finally over. I won’t find out the result for a few days, but I was happy with how I played. For those of you who don’t know, an L. Mus is a crazy difficult music exam that you can sit to prove you can play your instrument to a high level.

I feel so free!

I had a date with my sewing machine…

Before we get into the nitty gritty of my outfit, can we fawn over my shoes for a moment? I picked these up yesterday at the salvoes for $18. I. Have. Zero. Regrets.

image

I didn’t have the best day yesterday, so to keep myself from  moping around the house feeling sorry for myself I decided to hit the sewing machine.

image

I’ve had the idea and fabric for these shorts sitting around for about a month now. I used a self drafted pattern to make them. These are definitely the best shorts I’ve made to date (I mean, lk at the neatness of that zip!)

So yeah, sewing is fun!

I sewed away all of my troubles last night. I’m sitting a big important music exam soon and I’ve been sick this week, so my flute playing has not been as good as it usually is, which has made me panic just a little. Sewing with metallic pink fabric and polka Dot tulle has made me feel slightly better.

image

As per the last skirt I sewed in this style, the flowers were the most time consuming part of the sewing process. The base skirt took about an hour and a half to sew. The flowers were are other 4 hours on top.

image

Sometimes you just have to spend too many hours hand sewing pink roses onto a tulle skirt.

Tulle skirts. Fun times!

I really need to stop watching project runway. It not only makes me want to sew all day, but it makes me want to leave my uni course and become a designer (which is one of the few jobs which is less financially secure than music. Side note: Why can’t I be good at stuff which won’t make me poor?)

Anyway, I stayed up obnoxiously late hand sewing these details…

wpid-img_20140820_093629.jpg

…onto this skirt.

wpid-20140820_212515.jpg

Unfortunately due to poor overcast lighting conditions on campus, the picture doesn’t do the skirt justice. Basically it’s the perfect fairy skirt. It’s a triple layer circle skirt with linen as the bottom layer, and polka dot tulle making up the top two layers. As i mention before I hand sewed rose and leaf detail around the edge of the skirt to add to the whimsy. Each rose was lovingly crafted by my hands, and sworn at multiple times by my brain (Because making lots of tiny roses sucks!)

wpid-20140820_133334.jpg

I matched the skirt with my green cape, and green Lady Petrova blouse, then tied in the red in the skirt with my shiny red shoes.

wpid-20140820_133341.jpg

The gig was pretty fun to play, although, it was wayyyy too cold for an outdoor gig. Next time I think I’ll bring a warmer jacket.

This is one of the outfits I shot during last weeks crazy time. Not much to say as my brain is still recovering from the crazyness surrounding last weeks schedule.

Remember how I had that sewing binge? Welp, this was the other garment I made. I used this super cute Pinocchio print (Because who doesn’t love Pinocchio!?)

Blazer: Ojay, Cardigan: Review, Shirt: Target, Belt: Alannah Hill, Skort: Home made, Tights: Ebay, Shoes: Thrifted.

I’m really digging skorts at the moment. It’s everything I love about skirts without all of the sads I have when the wind gets strong in Newcastle (Seriously though, the wind does not play nicely with my clothes, meaning I either hold down my skirt, or my nickers are shown to the world 😦 )

wpid-20140806_140141.jpg

Also, see that bow I’ve pinned onto my skort? I’ve been looking for that bow for about 5 months now, and I finally found it! 😀 So many happy’s!

wpid-20140806_140147.jpg

So yeah, sewing all the things! I just hope I can keep sewing after semester gets busy.
